All German military personnel, including Waffen-SS personnel, were granted 14 days off each year, regardless of rank or years worked. The holiday policy was adopted to help maintain morale and was generally strictly adhered to (although adherence to certain war situations may have prevented it).

As a rule, an individual's annual leave was not taken at once, but was divided into sections that allowed soldiers to leave the front on several occasions in a given year to help relieve stress. Preference was usually given to senior service staff and spouses with children.

In addition to the basic annual leave, there were four other types of leave that gave soldiers time off for a variety of reasons (illness or death in his immediate family, personal convalescence due to illness or injury, damage to his home by a bomb and even successful athletes competing at national sporting events). .
