A reproduction of the dry, long-lasting bread packaging – known as Knäckebrot – in the typical style used by the German army during the Second World War. Each package contained 125 grams, matching the standard individual soldier’s ration.
Knäckebrot was a regular part of the Wehrmacht’s iron ration (Eiserne Portion). Its long shelf life, light weight, and durability made it ideal for field conditions. Soldiers typically carried it in the bread bag (Brotbeutel) or stored it together with mess gear in their field equipment, such as the mess kit compartment (Kochgeschirr) or in the supply section of the backpack. It was eaten on its own or served with spreads, canned meat, or marmalade.
Knäckebrot is a hard rye crispbread, valued for its exceptional shelf stability. The packaging often featured the manufacturer’s name and address, and some original examples included Wehrmacht inspection stamps. It was a fundamental part of food supplies both at the front and in the rear areas.
