Telegram (Sign of Life)

Reproduction of the German military “Lebenszeichen” telegram (sign of life), used by soldiers during World War II to send short updates to their families. The form-style layout with bold colored borders made it quick to fill in and easy to deliver through the field post system. Printed with waterproof ink.

These telegrams were mainly used when a soldier was injured, hospitalized, or had not reported home for an extended time. They served to notify family that he was alive and safe. Most often sent from field hospitals, prisons, recovery stations, or front-line units, especially when regular mail was limited.

The telegrams were color-coded – red was used for injury or urgent messages, green for standard status updates. Pre-printed fields minimized writing time and reduced sensitive content that might be censored. Today, they are a perfect addition to reenactment documents, desk displays, or historical exhibitions.
